For $600 US we will take you on a wonderful trek over the mountains and through the high jungle to the citadel of Machu Picchu. Available all year round as an alternative to the normal Inca trail.
A five day trek past the spectacular mountain of Salkantay. This great Apu (mountain Spirit) takes us in the backdoor to Machu Picchu over a wonderful 4600ms high pass and on to the magical citadel of Machu Picchu. The Salkantay trek is a real delight suitable for most people. One of our favourite treks in Peru.
Salkantay 5 Day Trek
Day 1. Cusco to Mollepata,Soraypampa and Salkantaypampa
Today is an easy day to get us used to the altitude. We take our private transport from Cusco to the town of mollepata, the last town on the way to the mountain. here we will have breakfast before continuing in our vehicle to the place called Soraypampa. Here we will meet our horses and wranglers and we will begin our short trek of approximately 90 mins to our campsite at Salkantaypampa.

Day 2. Salkantaypampa to Andenes
Today we ascend to the high pass at 4600ms. The most difficult day on the trek but also the most remarkable.
This is a specatacular day as we pass the impressive peak of Salkantay at 6260ms. After the pass we continue on approx 2 hours to our lunch spot at Wayraqmachay, where we will have a short rest.
After lunch we continue downhill to Andenes where we will set up camp for the night.

Day 3. Andenes to La Playa
A most delightful day of trekking down the eastern slope of the Andes to the village of La Playa. We will travel downhill all day through the outskirts of the jungle where there are hummingbirds, butterflies, coffee and cocoa.
The hiking is much easier at this lower altitude and the heat higher. For those that want a cold beer awaits at the end of the day.

Day 4. Llactapata, Hidro Electric and on to Machu Picchu town
Our trek today continues through banana, coffee, orange and passion fruit plantations. In addition to the carpet of wild strawberries that are along the trail. We will do a small amountof uphill approx 1hr 30 mins to the Inca town of Llaqtapata where you also have your first view of Machu Picchu. After a short tour of the side we continue down to the Hidro Electric plant and our train to Machu Picchu town where we will stay the night in a small hotel.

Day 5. Machu Picchu
After a pleasant nights sleep in the town of Machu Picchu we begin our with breakfast at 5am to give us plenty of time to enjoy the Inca citadel. After a 2 hour standard tour your guide is available to take you to some of the other interesting points within the vast site, such as the Sun Gate, Inka Bridge, The Temple of the Moon, or Huayna Picchu or ask your guide for some other options.
All our guides are proficient in flora, fauna and if you require we have a resident expert in orchids of Machu Picchu and the surrounding area.
After lunch we take the return train to Ollantaytambo and from there by bus back to Cuzco. B, L.
